Divorce or Stay Together? A Discernment Retreat in Bali to Decide With Clarity

Nobody makes their best decision about a marriage at eleven at night, after a full day of meetings, a school pickup and the same argument for the fourth time this month. That is still where most couples on the edge are trying to decide.
Why the decision keeps getting postponed
For high-achieving couples, the question of whether to stay rarely gets a proper hearing. It gets squeezed between flights, quarter ends and family obligations, and weeks become months. The partner who wants a divorce keeps waiting for certainty. The partner who is not ready keeps waiting for a sign. Both are running on empty, and an exhausted mind defaults to whatever feels least frightening that day.
What discernment counselling is
Discernment counselling is a short, structured process of up to five sessions for couples where one partner is considering separation and the other wants to repair the relationship. Developed by Dr Bill Doherty, it helps you reach clarity on one of three paths: keep things as they are, move towards separation, or commit to six months of couples therapy with divorce off the table.
The goal is for both of you to arrive at that decision with clarity and confidence. Clarity comes from understanding what has happened to the marriage and what each of you has brought to it. Confidence comes from knowing you looked at it properly, rather than deciding in a tired moment. It is not couples therapy, and it is not designed to fix the relationship in a week.
How a discernment retreat works
Instead of spreading sessions across two months, the retreat holds a discernment process informed by Bill Doherty’s model over three to five days in Bali. There is one discernment session each morning, and nothing else is scheduled.
The afternoons are yours. Sleep, swim, walk, read or simply sit with what came up. You do not have to spend that time together, and you do not have to talk about the marriage. Much of what matters in discernment counselling happens between sessions, once a conversation has had time to settle.
Before anything is booked, we meet on Zoom. The consultation checks that the retreat is the right fit: that one of you is leaning out, that both of you are willing to come, and that it is safe to do this work together. If discernment counselling is not right for you, I will say so and point you to what is.
Why spaciousness matters for a decision this big
When your nervous system is braced for the next email, the next fight or the next crisis, it chooses what feels safest rather than what is true. Rest changes what you can hear.
Sometimes the part of you that wanted to bolt softens once it is no longer exhausted. Sometimes a doubt you have been talking yourself out of becomes impossible to ignore. Either is useful. Both depend on having enough space to notice what is actually there.
Who this retreat is for
The retreat suits couples where one partner is leaning out and unsure whether couples therapy can help, and where both of you are willing to come. Bali is close enough that you can step away without disappearing from your life for weeks.
It is not suitable where there is violence or fear in the relationship, or where a final decision to leave has already been made.
What you leave with
You leave with a decision, reached with clarity and confidence: which path you are on, why, and what your own part in it has been. You do not leave with a repaired marriage, and you are not meant to.
A decision made rested is one you can still stand behind a year from now.
If you are both ready to stop deciding by exhaustion, book a Zoom consultation. It is how we make sure this is the right fit for both of you.
